The process……..

The aim of portrait painting is to capture more than just a likeness, but to seek and reveal character and inner strengths. This relies upon a certain amount of collaboration between artist and sitter and there are many options. When working from your own photographs I usually ask for several to give me a rounded informative view.

Portraits are crafted using professional materials which can be oils, acrylics on canvas, or watercolours and pastels on paper.

They are typically:-

  1. Head to shoulders : which can be small - A4 size +

  2. Head down to hands - A3 +

  3. Full sitting or standing A1 +++

    There can be multiple figures on one canvas including pets and family treasures.

    Individual studies of people, children and pets in pencil or ink start at £150.00 (these are included in the price of a full oil painting).

The procedure: After an initial discussion, a time and date will be set for the first sitting.

With full oils/acrylics a minimum of 3-4 sittings of at least one-hour will be scheduled. At the first sitting and after studies, sketch ideas will be presented and after approval, the final work will be started. This can take up to 2-months to complete and a further month to allow the paint to ‘cure’ if working with oil paints. Framing can be arranged.

Drawings take less time and -approximately 1.5 hours and only one sitting - or from a suitable acceptable photograph.
